Fredericka Dembitz Brandeis came to the U.S. in 1848 from Prague with her husband, Adolph Brandeis. He entered the grain and produce business in Louisville, Kentucky. Louis Brandeis (b. November 13, 1856, Louisville, Kentucky – d. October 5, 1941, Washington D.C.) was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, serving from 1916 until 1939. Brandeis was the Court’s 67th justice and its first Jewish-American justice. He was the son of immigrants from Bohemia, who came to Kentucky from Prague, then part of the Austrian Empire.
